Director of Development
12-month maternity leave contract. Start Date: May 15, 2012
The Ottawa Chamber Music Society (OCMS) is a not-for-profit organization with charitable status. Our mandate is to present chamber music of the highest possible artistic standard, and to make classical music accessible to everyone. We program up to 120 concerts and events every year, with a specific emphasis on the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival (Chamberfest). Chamberfest is one of Ottawa’s signature summer festivals. It attracts more than 80,000 music lovers to Canada’s national capital. We also program a fall/winter Concert Series, educational programs, fundraising events, and receptions. Our overall operating budget is $2.3 million.
We seek a dynamic fundraising professional to serve as a member of our senior management team. This is a 12-month maternity leave contract.
As the successful candidate, you will direct OCMS development efforts, including the planning and execution of: private-sector corporate and individual giving campaigns; cultivation and stewardship events; planned giving efforts; and other related development initiatives. You will also contribute to the preparation of grant and funding proposals.
You possess in-depth knowledge of the arts and entertainment industry, development-campaign design and management, sponsor acquisition and servicing, and special event oversight.
You have highly effective oral and written communications skills, preferably in both official languages. You bring a creative, entrepreneurial spirit to your work that builds and nurtures strong, lasting relationships to maximize financial success.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversees the development, implementation, and stewardship of individual giving programs, renewals, and new acquisitions.
- Provides gift activity and special-event organization support to senior volunteers and the Executive Director.
- Maintains accurate records of prospect moves and donor activity.
- Collaboratively leads the creation of an achievable development plan to support the organization’s mission and vision.
- Works with the Board, the Development Committee, and the Executive Director to define and present the support case for investment in OCMS.
- Takes a leadership role in the strategic development of major gifts.
- Plays a key role in the ongoing development of planned giving.
- Provides supervision and mentorship to box office and development staff.
- Plays a vital role in the oversight and development of special events related to the cultivation of donors and sponsors.
- Manages budgets of up to $400,000.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate has:
- An undergraduate degree, preferably in music, with a postgraduate degree in business or arts administration, or a relevant discipline.
- In-depth knowledge and proven experience in the arts and entertainment industry.
- Five or more years of senior management experience in a fundraising capacity with a classical music presenting organization, preferably one that incorporates chamber music programming.
- A successful track record of meeting fundraising goals.
- Experience in the organization and implementation of direct mail campaigns focused on soliciting and stewarding gifts.
- Extensive experience in the design and execution of successful annual giving, major gift, corporate sponsorship, and foundation campaigns.
- Extensive experience in the use of patron and donor databases to develop, analyze, and deliver donor and sponsorship campaigns.
- Advanced, details-oriented abilities to ensure the accuracy and security of information stored in integrated ticketing and development databases.
- A proven ability to oversee and direct the creative process for all development materials.
- A collaborative, hands-on, team player approach.
- The ability to analyze and interpret financial data.
- Computer/software skills with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and database software.
- Time management and multi-tasking abilities.
- Effective leadership, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
- Outstanding communication and listening skills.
- Fluency in both English and French (oral and written) is a strong asset.
